Dr. Jane Maienschein specializes in the history and philosophy of biology and the way that biology, bioethics, and biopolicy play out in society. Focusing on research in embryology, genetics, and cell biology, Maienschein combines detailed analysis of the epistemological standards, theories, laboratory practices and experimental approaches with study of the people, institutions, and changing social, political, and legal context in which science thrives. She loves teaching and is committed to public education about the life sciences and their human dimensions, running an educational program for the Federal Judicial Center, serving as chair for the Arizona Consortium for Medicine, Society, and Values and as Treasurer for the new Arizona Arts, Science, and Technology Academy.

Jane Maienschein has won the History of Science Society’s Joseph Hazen Education Award and all of Arizona State University’s major teaching and other distinguished faculty awards. She was awarded the Parents Association Chair in 2000. She is co-editor of the Journal of the History of Biology, co-chair with Susan Fitzpatrick of the Gordon Conference on Science and Technology Policy for 2004. Her 3 books and 10 (co) edited books include most recently the well-received Whose View of Life? Embryos, Cloning, and Stem Cells (Harvard University Press, 2003; paperback 2005).
