Chad Monfreda is a doctoral student in the Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology. His research deals with global environmental governance, with a focus on how scientific assessments of biodiversity and ecosystem services could promote effective and democratically accountable decision-making in a rapidly globalizing world. Prior to joining CSPO and the Project on Global and Comparative Knowledges in 2007, he worked in Montpellier, France on a series of worldwide consultations toward an International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity (IMoSEB). In 2007, Chad earned a master’s degree in environment & resources from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE), where, as a research assistant, he produced a new generation of global crop maps. He also has worked extensively on a popular indicator called the ecological footprint at the sustainability think tank Redefining Progress, and has written about sustainability science for various venues, including WorldChanging.com.
