J. Macgregor (Greg) Wise is Professor in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at ASU’s New College on the west campus. His areas of interest include cultural studies of technology, media studies (both old media and new media), and globalization. He is the author of Exploring Technology and Social Space (1997, Sage Publications) and the forthcoming Cultural Globalization: A User’s Guide (Blackwell) and co-author of Culture and Technology: A Primer (with Jennifer Daryl Slack of Michigan Technological University; 2005, Peter Lang Publishers) and MediaMaking: Mass Media in a Popular Culture (2nd edition; with Lawrence Grossberg, Ellen Wartella, and D. Charles Whitney; 2006, Sage Publications). He has published in journals such as Cultural Studies and Television and New Media and sits on the editorial boards of Communication Review, Communication Theory, Critical Studies in Media Communication, and Cultural Studies. Dr. Wise has made conference presentations nationally and internationally, including in China, Korea, and Russia and presented a plenary keynote address on culture and technology at the 2006 Asia Culture Forum in Gwangju, Korea. He is a former chair of the Philosophy of Communication Division of the International Communication Association.

Dr. Wise teaches classes on communication and technology, television studies, semiotics of visual communication, new media, cross-cultural communication, and critical research methods. He also teaches special topics courses on surveillance and communication as well as representations of the living machine on film. Greg grew up in Asia and the Middle East, received his BA in Communication and English from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and his MA and PhD in Speech Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to taking up his position at ASU in 1999, he taught at Clemson University in South Carolina. |
