Program Area: Technological Systems and Infrastructures

How can we understand and manage the complex systems and structures we build and depend on – and which seem to have a momentum of their own? While we have the knowledge to construct the communication, energy, transportation and other systems and infrastructures that now gird the globe, it is often the case that their complexity in operations and their ability to influence so many parts of society often defies analysis and control.
